PRESIDENT’S COMMENTARY
By NWPA President,....... Jeffrey Dolezal
As soon as I finish writing this colunm, I’ll be heading off to
Waynesville, North Carolina for the 12 Annual Smoky Mountain
Wheelchair 9-Ball Shootout. I’m really looking forward to this
event again this year, even though I’m not so optimistic on how I
will fare in the tournament, since my practice regiment is
essentially nonexistent. Despite any personal challenges I may
have on the green felt, I feel compelled to travel to North
Carolina to compete in the Smoky Mountain Shootout, as it always
proves to be a unique and memorable pool experience in a beautiful
local setting.
Following the Smoky Mountain Shootout, the NWPA will be working
hard on finalizing plans for the Arizona pV4 Desert 9-Ball
Classic, which will be held from May 30 — June 1 at Clicks
Billiards in Phoenix, Arizona, despite any rumors to the contrary.
This event will be the fourth stop of
seven in the 2008 season of the PVA / NWPA National Wheelchair
Billiards Tournament Series and will include two trophy
tournaments, an open Main Event and a Second Flight tournament.
The entry form for this event is included in this newsletter. If
you plan on attending this tournament, please mail your entry form
to the listed address (NWPA’s Las Vegas Office) as soon as
possible to reserve your spot.
DO NOT SEND CASH THROUGH THE MAIL
.
Entry fees may be paid on-site in cash or by money order. Space
permitting, on-site player registrations will also be accepted. I
hope to see many of you in sunny Phoenix next month.
I suspect that many players will migrate north to the Riviera
Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, following the conclusion of the
Arizona PVA Desert 9-Ball Classic, for the next NWPA sanctioned
event, the Las Vegas Open. This event, which will be held on June
7 and 8 is presented by the American Cue Sports Alliance for the
second time. The entry form for the Las Vegas Open is also
included in this newsletter. If you plan on attending this
tournament, please mail your entry form to the listed address as
soon as possible to reserve your spot. NWPA players who compete in
this event may also elect to compete in the ACS Singles 8- Ball
Championship, which will be held on June 9 and 10 at the same
location. Check out
www.americancuesports.org
for the player eligibility require ments and to download the
separate entry form.
The Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA 9 Ball Classic, which was held, last
month in Richmond, Virginia. turned out to be a nice event which
resulted in the crowning of two new NWPA champions.
Congratulations to Ken Nottle of Parkesburg, Pennsylvania for his
first Main Event win and to David Richardson, a student attending
Radford University in Virginia for winning the Second Flight
Event. David was competing in his first pool tournament ever! A
full article on event is included in this newsletter. I do wish to
offer my special thanks to the Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA Chapters’
Board of Directors and staff, for producing a fine tournament
experience.
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, the NWPA will maintain
a booth at this year’s BCA Tradeshow, courtesy of the Billiard
Congress of America. ft will be a 10’ X 20’ booth, large enough
for us to set up a pool table for skill demonstrations and
exhibitionl challenge matches. The BCA Tradeshow will be open on
June 12 — 14 in Charlotte, North Carolina and we are looking for a
few NWPA players to help showcase the talent within our
organization, by participating in demonstrations arid exhibition
matches. The floor of the tradeshow will be covered with industry
leaders and many professional players will also be in attendance.
If this sounds of interest to you and you wish to be considered,
please call me at (703) 817-1215 or e-mail me at: jdolezal@cox.net
Finally, I would like to extend my congratulations and good luck
to Austin Murphy, who is a rising young star on the professional
pool scene, for being selected, by fan voting, to compete in a
heads up match, against pooi legend Efren Reyes, in the IPT
Viewer’s Choice Challenge 8-Ball Match on April 29 Austin is the
younger brother of NWPA player, Braden Murphy. This match can be
viewed live, for free, on the internet, through the IPT’s website
at:

Check out the website for more details on this exciting event.
That’s all I have for now. I hope to see you soon at an NWPA
event.
