NWPA President,
Jeffery Dolezal
I
was just reading some billiard news updates on www.azbilliards.com and came across a story that just blew me away about 14 year old pool phenom Brendan Crockett, who is playing in the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship in Las Vegas as I write (May 17 The field size for the event was 128 players and young Crockett drew Jasmin Ouschan of Austria in the first round. Ouschan, who was named the 2009 Player of the Year, won 3 professional women billiard’s events in 2009 and compiled a host of other top finishes in other events. In March of this year, Ouschan accomplished something that has never been done before at the European Championships; taking the gold medal in 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball and 14.1 (Straight Pool).
At the U.S. Open 10-Ball event, Crockett played the match of his life, defeating Ouschan, 9 games to 6. Despite what happens during the rest of the tournament, Crockett will always remember this victory over one of the world’s best pool players.
Those of you who were in Reno for the 2008 World Championship for Juniors and \Wheelchair Players, hosted by the United States Pool Players Association (USPPA) in collaboration with the NWPA, may remember Brendan Crockett from that event. He was playing in his first world championship, after having won a qualifier tournament hosted by the USPPA in California the week before. Brendan had learned to play all on his own and the USPPA qualifier was his first pooi tournament. During the joint world championship, Brendan’s father, Bill Crockett, took an interest in what the NWPA was doing, with respect to promoting wheelchair billiards for disab’ed persons, and he has assisted us in many ways ever since. The NWPA is grateful and wishes Brendan much continued success in his billiards adventures.
Speaking of Reno, Tony Annigoni, President of the USPPA, is once again going to produce a great event for the billiards world, the Pacific Rim International Billiards Expo, and we are going to be a part of it. The expo will be held from November 19 thru December 6, 2010 at the Peppermill, one of Reno’s nicest hotels. Events include the USPPA Pro-Am, the Reno Open, World Juniors and World Wheelchair Championships, plus the Two Cushion Club Poker Challenge. More details later regarding the specific dates for the wheelchair event and entry requirements, but for now, mark your calendars!
Good luck to all of the NWPA members who will be participating in the 9-Ball and other events at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Denver, Colorado over the 4 of July holiday. Bring Home the Gold!
Enclosed, please find, fill out and return the entry form for the 3 event of the PVA/NWPA National Wheelchair Billiards Tournament Series: The 7 Annual U.S. Open 8-Ball Championship, hosted by the Buckeye PVA Chapter. This event will take place at Scoreboard Billiards in Northfield, Ohio on July 23-25, 2010. That’s all I have for now...
NWPA Tournament Action;
14th Annual Smoky
Mountain Wheelchair
9-Ball Shootout
By Charles Interrante
This year, we had 10 players, a small turnout for such a great event. The facility at the Haywood County Fairgrounds in Waynesville, North Carolina, is very accessible, with a large parking lot and easy entrance into the building. Inside, there is a smooth, easy pushing concrete floor, plenty of room around the 7 foot tables and on-site food and beverages.
Play was started after Gary Caldwell welcomed us to the 14 Annual Smoky Mountain Wheelchair 9-Ball Shootout. In the first round, Mike Chenail lost to Matthew Gleaves,
7 to 4. Jason Ray received a Bye, as did Charles Interrante and David Richardson. Jake Padgett lost to Mike Watts, 7 to 6, while Randy Saulman, John Donnelly and Mark Jones also received Byes.
In the second round winner’s side, Matt G. lost to Jason R., 7to 5. John D. lost to Mark J., 7 to 3. In the second round one- loss side, Mike C. and Jake P. received a Bye. In the third round winner’s side, David R. lost to Jason R., 7 to 1 and Mark J. lost to Randy S., 7 to 5. In the third round one-loss side, John D. lost to Mike C., 5 to 3 and Mike W. received a Bye. Jak P. lost to Charles I., 5 to 2 and Matt G. received a Bye. In the fourth round winner’s side, Randy S. lost to Jason R., 7 to 5. In the fourth round one-loss side, Mike W. lost to Mike C., 5 to 2 and Charles I. lost to Mall C., 5 to 3.
In the fifth round one-loss side, David R. lost to Mike C., 5 to 1 and Mark J. lost to Matt G., 5 to 4. In the sixth round one- loss side, Mike C. lost to Matt C., 5 to 3. In the seventh round one-loss side, Matt G. lost to Randy S., 5 to 0.
In the final match, Jason Ray lost to Randy Saulman, 7 to 5. Since this was a true double elimination format and Jason only had one loss, they had to play a second final match. In the second final match, Jason Ray lost to Randy Saulman, 5 to 4. Congratulations to Jason Ray for a great tournament and a well deserved 2’ place finish. Congratulations to Randy Saulman on his 1 place finish and for a very exciting set of final matches.
On a side note, Charlie Hans was unable to make this year’s event and to defend his title. Charlie has won this event 7 times and we hope to see him in next year’s event. Special thanks to Gary Caldwell and the ARC of Haywood County for hosting this event. This event helps support individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Special thanks to Mike Gulyassy and Baby’s Pro Shop for cue stick sales, maintenance and repair. We would like to recognize and thank all of the staff, volunteers and vendors who gave of their time and assistance.

2010 Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA
9-Ball Classic
By Jeff Dolezal
For the sixth consecutive year, The Playing Field in Richmond, Virginia served as the host venue for the Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA 9- Ball Classic. This event was held on April 30 - May 2, 2010. Seventeen (17) players paid the meager tournament entry fee for the chance to compete for a total prize pool of $4,000.00. This event was the 2 stop of 5 total events in the PVA/NWPA National Wheelchair Billiards Tournament Series — Season 4.
Ken Nottle of Parkesburg, Pennsylvania signed up to defend his championship title from the 2009 event, which would not be easy given the strength of the other players in the field, which included some of the stars of the PVA / NWPA Billiards Tour, such as Charlie Hans of Cincinnati, Ohio, who was the overall PVA Points Champion (Season 1 and 3 ) Bill Frisby of Floodwood, Minnesota, who was the overall PVA Points Champion and PVA Member Champion (Season 2) and Charles lnterrante of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, who was the overall PVA Points Runner-Up (Seasons 1-3).
Play began on the morning of April with only one match in the true first round of play, due to the placement of Byes. Local Richmond player, James Carver matched up against Robert Satterwhite of Stem, North Carolina, with Carver advancing to the second round with a score of 7 games to 2. Carver was then paired up against Michael Chenail of Palmyra, Virginia. Chenail, who finished each of the first three seasons of the PVA Tournament Series in the Top 20 with a personal best ranking of 7 overall in Season 1, was looking to make his mark in this event. Winning 7 games to 2 over Carver, he would advance to the third round to meet up with Bill Frisby, who had just finished defeating Angel Torres of Reading, Pennsylvania. Frisby defeated Chen 7 to 2, sending Chenail over to the one- loss side of the brackets. In another bracket on the no-loss side, Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA Chapter President, Chuck Willis of Chester, Virginia won his first two matches against Craig Harvey (Richmond, Virginia) and Sidney Chapman (Newport News, Virginia), 7 games to 2 and 7 games to 1 respectively. The path led Willis to a match with Frisby in round 4. Willis fought hard and kept the match close before finally falling 7 games to 5 to Frisby.
2009 defending champion, Ken Nottle, recorded victories for his first two matches against Charles Interrante, 7 games to 2 and Bill Lint (Derry, Pennsylvania), 7 games to 5. While these victories moved him on to a match pairing with Charlie Hans, he was openly expressing a lack of confidence in the strength of his own game. Hans was able to capitalize on Nottle’s uncertainty, winning their match, 7 games to 5.
This left just Hans and Frisby to compete for the no-loss hot seat, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the championship match and a tournament finish of no less than 2 place. Hans played extremely well during this match, capturing the hot seat with a score of 7 games to 3 over Frisby.
On the one-loss side, Jeff Dolezal (Fairfax, Virginia) scored 3 consecutive victories against Carver, Lint and Willis, before finally falling to Chenail, 5 games to 2 in the first semi-final.
Dolezal finished the Main Event in 4 place. Before his match with Dolezal, Chenail had earned victories against David Richardson (Richmond, Virginia), Jimmy May (Midlothian, Virginia) and Ken Nottle, ending the 2009 champion’s dreams of successfully defending histile and leaving him with more questions about his game.
In the second semi-final, Chenail was paired off against Frisby. The winner would get a shot at the championship title and the loser would take home 3 place honors. The momentum was clearly with Chenail, who had defeated two top NWPA players in back-to-back matches. Chenail would carry this momentum forward by defeating Frisby, 5 games to 3. Bill Frisby took 3 place. In the championship match, Chenail would have to beat Hans twice in two races to 7 in order to take down his first PVA/NWPA Main Event tournament win. Despite a great end run leading up to the final, Chenail could not find the answer to topple Hans. Hans won the first set of the championship match, 7 games to 2 and with it, was crowned as the Champion of the 2010 Virginia Mid- Atlantic PVA 9-Ball Classic. Michael Chenail was the Main Event’s runner-up, a personal best for Chenail.
In the Second Flight Event,
Sidney Chapman defeated Johnny
Holland (Goldsboro, North
Carolina), 5 games to 3, to claim
the event’s championship title.
Holland finished as runner-up, with
David Richardson in 3 place and
Angel Torres in 4 place.
This tournament event was made possible due to the outstanding efforts of the staff and volunteers of the tournament host, the Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA Chapter in securing local sponsors to help support the event, combined with a grant from the Paralyzed Veterans of America, which helped to cover the associated administrative and support expenses. Viking Cue Manufacturing, Inc. donated some beautiful, high quality playing cues to the PVA chapter, for them to raffle off in order to meet tournament expenditures.
The management and staff of The Playing Field welcomed the PVA/NWPA and the players back to Richmond with good food and exceptional service. There is no way that this event would have been possible without their hard work and support. Thanks go out to The Playing Field’s staff, its General Manager, Larry Smith and owner, Tegan Stephen. This is a great place to play billiards anytime one is in the Richmond area.
Special thanks to Michelle Shaw-Richie, Executive Director of the Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA Chapter and to Shawn Interrante, Tournament Director for their efforts.

*************************On a sad note...
The NWPA has learned that one of its long standing members has passed away. Randall C. Morin, from Grand Forks, North Dakota, was a steadfast tournament player in the 1990’s and the turn of the century. Randall was regularly seen in NWPA events throughout the Midwest and also represented the United States team in International challenges events in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Tampa, Florida.
Randall’s nickname was “The Jinx”, taken from the cartoon character, Jinx the Cat, the predecessor to Felix the Cat. Randall will always be remembered for his competitive spirit and his wry sense of humor.
